Snow meant a late start for Queenstown and Arrowtown schools and forced one main road closure this morning.

All schools in the Wakatipu opened at 10am this morning to allow for transport time on what were slippery, white roads in the area.

The Queenstown Lakes District council prompted drivers to carry chains today as there have been forecasts for snow this afternoon as well.

The Crown Range from Wanaka to Arrowtown had been closed up until about 8.30am and once opened drivers were enforced to fit chains.

The Milford Rd had also been closed this morning due to ice and snow.

While no weather-related accidents had been reported this morning, police are reminding drivers to take extra care on the roads.

Acting Southern Road Policing Manager Snr Sgt Steve Larking says the freezing conditions and forecast snow to low levels is a timely reminder to adapt driving habits accordingly.

There had already been a number of crashes across the district over the past week due to icy conditions and people driving too fast for these conditions, he said.

"We remind people to get the latest information about road closures and the conditions of driving routes from NZTA or their local council and to plan their journeys according to the weather and road conditions.''
