Hockey: Blues better Blacks in University challenge

It was a battle of bragging rights in the premier men's match between University Black and University Blue, with the Blues prevailing 4-2 on Saturday.

It was a fast and physical game with both sides wanting the win to help their title aspirations.

Both teams had their chances but the Blues proved better at converting them.

The Blues got the best possible start through a well-worked goal to striker Tom Gardiner after just five minutes.

But the Blacks struck back two minutes later with some good interplay before captain Ben Wilkinson scored to even things up.

University Blue's Nick Instone scored his team's second goal five minutes later, finishing off some good play by his side.

Both sides then tried their best to take control of the match. However, University Black let a couple of opportunities slip and these proved costly, with the Blues going into halftime 2-1 up.

The match continued to be physical in the second half and University Black started strongly with a goal to midfielder James Bennett from a penalty corner.

University Blue lifted the intensity after conceding a second goal and began to dominate the match.

Some good attacking play led to back-to-back penalty corners and University Blue struck through Tom Clarkson to regain the lead.

After some fast hockey and threatening attacks, Clarkson struck again from another penalty corner to give his side a commanding 4-2 lead.

Wilkinson and Bennett tried their best to ignite University Black's attack, while Clarkson, captain Richard Storey and striker Aaron Farrell stood out for University Blue, with the three appearing all over the park and showing some real promise.

In the other premier game, Albany beat Kings United 5-2.
