It wasn’t quite the graduation they were expecting.

But University of Otago graduates were making the best of it over the weekend, after a security threat scuppered their plans and cancelled graduation ceremonies.

On a very blustery Saturday, hundreds of graduates and their whanau converged on the university campus, decked out in their regalia, to take the traditional graduation photos.

Those spoken to were taking the change of plans in their stride.

Paul Hulston (22), who was graduating with a bachelor of physiotherapy degree, said the real point of graduation was to get together with his class and celebrate.

"Even though it’s a little bit different, we’re still able to do that," he said.

"It doesn’t really take away too much."

Gracie Nichols (28) was graduating with a doctorate in clinical dentistry in orthodontics.

"I think we’re making the most of it," she said.

"It’s a bit more casual. There’s more time to do our own thing."

She was planning a small capping ceremony in her favourite cafe, before parading down George St.

Bachelor of physiotherapy graduate Leah Tuhi (21) and her family had driven down to Dunedin from Hawke’s Bay for the week.

"All things considered, I’m just happy to be here with my family."

As of yesterday, graduation ceremonies planned for Wednesday and Saturday were expected to go ahead.

Hundreds of graduands also took part in makeshift ceremonies at both the university and Otago Polytechnic last week.

Police are still investigating the threat. No new details were available.
