Charges ‘likely’ for filming

The boy who filmed the callous assault of a young John Paul II High School pupil in the sanctuary of her classroom, is likely to be charged.

Senior Sergeant Brent Cook, of Greymouth, said it was "quite likely" the Greymouth High School pupil who filmed the attack and then posted the video on social media would be charged.

The two Greymouth High School girls who stormed into the classroom and left the year 9 pupil at the Catholic high school badly shaken and with facial injuries, have already been charged and will appear in the Youth Court.

The pair have been suspended from school, and three others were stood down for five days.

"The police are still investigating the incident and the filming of the assault was part of the investigations," Snr Sgt Cook said.

The stand-down period is up this week and Snr Sgt Cook said he expected Greymouth High to take the "appropriate" action concerning the pupils on their return to school.

"I hope the school takes some strong action but, ultimately, it is up to the school as to how they address the matters with the returning students."

Greymouth High principal Andy England confirmed the stand-down period was about to expire.

"Before those students return to school there will be meetings with the students to set down a return to school plan to make sure of safe behaviours."

Meetings would also be arranged separately with the girls who had been suspended to lay out the school’s expectations before they were allowed back.

"I am pretty confident these will be met by all of the students when they come back. It is pretty unusual for students returning following stand-down to breach the conditions."
