Having grown a moustache and come fresh from a hair-lightening appointment specifically for the 2012 season of The Sound of Music, Chris Parvin is concerned he is losing his identity.

"People just don't recognise me, they just see this big moustache coming towards them."

Mr Parvin has been called Basil Fawlty, Freddie Mercury and the Lorax as his performance as Captain Georg von Trapp approaches.

His son, Alfie Parvin (10), will share the role of Capt von Trapp's son Freidrich with another young actor.

Asked how the Queenstown father and son were dealing with playing father and son on-stage, Mr Parvin praised the abilities of director Bryan Aitken and said he could not help embracing his character while on-stage.

"When we are here [at the theatre] we are the captain and Freidrich; when we get home we step into real life."

Alfie Parvin had initially auditioned for the show and when he got a call back Mr Parvin was told to audition, "but secretly I really, really wanted to do it".

While Alfie's stage resume included a role as an alien in a Christmas play, Mr Parvin said he had been in other forms of entertainment, such as stand-up and MC, for a number of years, but was not as well-versed in theatre.

"I knew nothing about the technicalities of theatre, of acting, so this has been like going to college and actually listening to lectures - which is something I have never done.

"It's a very professional show, I can say that ... because I know what goes into it."
