Lashings of sugar, several cups of flour and a lot of imagination is what it took.

Invercargill resident Eva Van Eeden spent about four weeks creating her gingerbread village.

The architectural student is among the 50 contestants taking part in the Invercargill Gingerbread House Contest at H&J Smith, which is supporting Number 10 Southland Youth One Stop Shop.

Mrs Van Eeden said it was only her second attempt at a gingerbread house.

"I’d never done anything like this before, but in 2018 I decided to create a design to support the contest and the cause.

"This year it went bigger than predicted," she joked.

Members of the public will be able to see the display and vote for their favourite piece, voting closing on January 8.
