Noise limit rules unchanged for now

Queenstown's noise limits will remain unchanged and noise provisions will be incorporated into the district plan, rather than making a plan change.

A Queenstown Lakes District Council strategy meeting yesterday considered public responses from a survey of those in the residential area next to the town centre.

Public opinion was sought on changing the noise limits and zoning, the use of outdoor speakers and noise insulation, and noise at public events.

The council received 28 responses, fewer than half the number received in the 2011 consultation.

Noise limit responses suggested the majority of people supported a noise limit change.

The current daytime noise limits are from 8am to 10pm and 22 of the responses supported extending the daytime noise limits beyond 10pm.

The majority suggested 11pm would be more suitable.

Many respondents supported exempting public events from noise controls.

The council is reviewing the district plan and expects a reviewed plan to be available in October 2013. This time-span would give the council more time to consider the noise issue.

The majority of councillors, decided it was best to wait before making a decision.

"Two things you can achieve by waiting a year is you don't make a mess and the other thing is you hopefully deal with this comprehensively," general manager of policy and planning, Philip Pannett told the meeting.

Senior policy analyst Ralph Henderson said although the noise limits would "stay the same for another year, we would still consult property owners".
