A woman swam for at least three hours to raise the alarm about her missing companion after a boat she was on capsized off the Gold Coast.
The woman went fishing with a man at 7pm (AEST) on Tuesday, police say.
The pair was thrown from the boat when it was submerged by a wave between 9pm and 11pm (AEST).
They started swimming to shore, but became separated after about an hour.
The woman, 29, raised the alarm at a hotel around 2am (AEST) and was taken to Gold Coast Hospital suffering from exposure.
An air search is underway on Wednesday for the missing man, aged in his late 30s.
Authorities are searching the stretch of coast between Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.
