A Dunedin social group has been running for more than 20 years. And when the run is over it is time for a beer.

"It started off 21 years ago when four blokes from Leith Harriers wanted to improve their running for the Coast to Coast," member Richard Hendry said this week.

"The social part is a big part of it all, so we decided to meet at a different pub each week and go for a run," he said.

"After the run we have a beer. We prefer where they sell jugs, rather than the posher pubs.

Back in the old days we'd stay until the pub closed, but we're all getting on a bit now. The average age has crept up a bit over the years and we probably average in our mid-40s now."

But, age had not wearied them, Mr Hendry said.

"We have no rules, or president or committee or anything like that. It's just a good, solid hour run each week.

We've had as few as two and as many as 26. But, we usually get around 13 - the Devil's number." Mr Hendry and Stu Hodges are the only original members of the group.

"A big part of it is the bonding. And it's a good way to break up the week," Mr Hodges said.

New members were always welcome, Mr Hendry said.

"Anyone who wants to join in can come along. You just have to be able to run 11 or 12 kms in an hour."
