South Auckland scrub fire contained

A controlled fire which got out of control, threatening neighbouring houses and power lines in South Auckland, has been contained.

Fire services were called to the fire in Waiuku about 10.20am after a controlled fire spread in 10 to 15 knot winds.

It was initially threatening homes on Kaihau Rd but has been contained, Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said.

Power lines running above the fire posed a risk to firefighters, he said.

No houses were damaged.

Meanwhile a fire safety officer is returning to the scene of a house fire in Ruawai, 30km south of Dargaville, which engulfed the occupied house last night.

People were in the house at the time of the fire but no one was injured, Mr Phillips said.

It was not known what caused the fire.
