Cricket: Wellington fighting back against Volts

Wellington are showing some fight against Otago today despite facing an uphill battle in their Plunket Shield match in Dunedin.

The Firebirds, trailing by 407 on the first innings, have progressed to 80 for two at lunch in their second dig, still 328 runs short of making Otago bat again.

At the crease are Joshua Brodie on 35 and Grant Elliott on 7. Opener Michael Papps (4) and Stephen Murdoch (22) are back in the shed.

Ian Butler and Nathan McCullum have a wicket apiece for the home side.

After finishing last night on 486 for 7, Otago, perhaps surprisingly, batted on this morning, taking their total through to 519 for 8 before declaring.

Neil Wagner and Jimmy Neesham wasted little time in moving the Otago score past 500 today, the mammoth total set up yesterday by Hamish Rutherford (239) and captain Derek de Boorder (92).  Both Wagner and Neesham scored 32, Neesham remaining the not out batsman.

Play began at 11am after a delay due to moisture on the field.
