An Auckland-based company has applied for resource consent to establish a "24/7" gym at Hawthorne Dr, Frankton, in a building owned by Diversified NZ Property Fund Ltd.
Jetts Fitness New Zealand Ltd operates in about 20 locations around New Zealand, with its head office based in Auckland.
Its resource consent application said the company had chosen the Hawthorne Dr tenancy "because of the nature and location of the Remarkables Park Town Centre".
"It has access to a large amount of workers in the area and residents in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
"The average household income in the area is above the national average, implying that gym memberships are a likely expenditure many people will consider.
"Jetts will provide a valuable amenity to these areas."
The franchised fitness centre focused on providing "individual, self-managed weight and cardio equipment" with no group classes.
Two staff members would be on site from 8.30am to 11.30am and 3.30pm to 7.30pm. Outside those hours, no staff would be present, with access via a swipe card.
Maximum capacity in the leased area of 331sq m would be 30 members at peak usage times - from 6am to 7.30am and 5pm to 8pm - with member numbers outside those hours about four or five members at any one time.
"Given the nature of the gym being 24/7 and weights/cardio-orientated, many members cycle to the gym, as the membership focus has been on multisport athletes who manage their hours around other training," the application said.
"It is noted there is no group classes, no cafe, no sauna, spa or steam room and no child-minding activities.
"This is a small, boutique activity."
The gym had internal security cameras as well as "alert buttons" for member safety while they worked out alone at night.
"Non-members cannot access the site outside staffed hours."
Jetts would have use of seven car parks of the 700 within the Remarkables Park Town Centre, with its first-floor premises beside the Southern Institute of Technology.
With regard to noise, the application said there were "no opening windows" within the gym, as it was air conditioned.
"Customers use headphones to tune in to TV/music.
"There are no cardio classes.
"As such, there is no amplified music on the site.
"We are confident that Jetts' noise levels comply with the zone restrictions."
The company sought for consent to be granted on a non-notified basis.
