A disabled man was kicked out of Parliament today after he disrupted proceedings by repeatedly honking the horn of his mobility scooter from the public gallery.
Wayne Muir, known as "Tiny'', began beeping the horn as Labour MP Grant Robertson spoke about ACC, and continued to do so until security guards made him leave the chamber.
As he was escorted out, Mr Muir argued with the guards and drove into one while saying "If you wreck this [the scooter], I'll wreck you'' and "You've buggered it, it's *****d,''.
He told the guards he could not stop the horn from beeping, but later told media he had intentionally interrupted the session.
After being served a trespass notice, Mr Muir drove off Parliament's premises where he told reporters that he "just wanted help''.
Mr Muir, whose legs have both been amputated, said he had intentionally disrupted Parliament to draw attention to people like himself who needed help but were being ignored.
"I've just had enough and nobody will talk to me ... nobody wants to know.
"I came to Parliament today to do just one thing, and that was stop the House, and that's what I did, so I'm happy with that.
"I've been to the local MP, Chris Hipkins, in Upper Hutt Valley - they just write letters and letters and nothing happens.''
Mr Muir said he was living off the local food bank, and his requests for more assistance from Work and Income New Zealand had been rejected.
Parliament's security manager Janette Smidt told APNZ the security guard who was driven into had not been injured, and she described the situation as "a difficult one to handle''.
Mr Muir had previously visited Parliament, although Ms Smidt said she could not remember any other occasion when he had caused problems.
The trespass notice issued today was for two years.
