The Roman Catholic Diocese of Dunedin offered the use of its cathedral for the service, as the ceiling and roof of St Paul’s remain damaged, and the crypt and part of the church were extensively water damaged in the fire that required eight fire engines at its peak.
Dr Benford said the church felt very welcome at St Joseph’s.
"It went really well. It was a lovely service."
He was grateful for the hospitality of the Catholic Church, which allowed the celebration to go ahead, and hoped the Anglican congregation could return to St Paul’s for its service next Sunday.
The Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, the Very Rev Dr Tony Curtis, was amazed by the support he had received and said the cathedral was determined to rise out of the ashes.
An unspecified electrical event caused the fire.
