Chance to join Brain Week Walk

At least $82,000 has been raised for the Neurological Foundation Chair of Neurosurgery campaign by Queenstown-based company Ultimate Hikes, with fewer than 10 spots remaining on the Brain Week Walk, a fundraiser for the campaign.

Last month the company announced plans to give the entire price of the five-day guided walk to the campaign, with 50 spots available for the historic walk, which leaves Queenstown on March 21 and returns on March 25.

The package includes all meals and creature comforts for $2000 and includes transport, shared accommodation, guides and all meals.

As of yesterday morning, nine spots were still available.

In 2010, Dunedin won its battle to retain neurosurgical services in the city, but it is now securing the future of the service by establishing a University of Otago-based Chair in Neurosurgery.

Ultimate Hikes manager Noel Saxon said the company was conscious of the need to keep those services in Dunedin and "proud" to help.

"By taking part in this walk, people will contribute to a research hub that will lead to improved outcomes for those with debilitating illnesses, trauma and diseases of the brain, spinal cord and nerves.

"We know walking is one of the best things you can do for your brain and walking the Milford Track is one of the best things you can do full stop." "It's an amazing walk and this is an amazing cause.

"Every cent people pay to join this walk goes to the establishment of the chair, so people get to walk the track as a way of supporting the cause."

Bookings, which must be referenced "Brain Walk", can be made by phone or email.
