Tennis: McGlashan pushed but retains top spot

McGlashan was taken to the limit but held its lead in the President's Cup two-man competition when it beat Mornington-Roslyn in Dunedin club tennis on Saturday.

National junior quarterfinalists Carlos Reid and Paddy Ou were given a stern workout by Tom Beamish and Adam Williams before winning 2-1.

In the doubles, played first, Reid and Ou won the first set 6-3, dropped the second 6-7 and took the decider 11-9 in the tiebreak.

In the singles, Reid lost the first set 4-6 to Beamish before claiming the next two 6-3, 6-4.

Ou, recently returned from China, where he did not play any tennis, lost the first set 6-0 to Williams. He looked back on track when he took the second 6-2 but Williams was too steady in winning the third 6-1.

Balmacewen beat Eastern Harbour 2-1 securing the result with a final 6-3, 6-1 doubles win.

Jon Bakos lost to Harbour's Ryan Eggers 4-6, 6-4, 0-6 in the top singles but James Bourne beat newcomer Tony Wallbutton 6-1, 7-6 and played a strong part in the doubles win, including two behind-the-back reflex volleys to win points.

Balmacewen women beat St Clair 2-1. Brittany Wong (Balmacewen) took the top single against Lauren Fowler 7-6, 6-3.

Sonia Alexnian lost to former Otago representative Adrien Dever, who was making a return to competitive play, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.

Balmacewen won the doubles 6-2, 6-3.

The other tie between leaders Eastern Harbour and Mornington-Roslyn will be played later, by mutual agreement.
