The wind may have been howling up the harbour and the sun may have had the strength of a one-bar heater, but it did not stop plenty of supporters from standing on the sporting sidelines on Saturday.

When Covid-19 struck in New Zealand and the country was locked down, it put the brakes on much of winter sport, which was set to get under way in late March.

Now, more than three months later, community sport is back in full swing, and it seems many of us are enjoying being back to either playing or watching.

Never mind that July can sometimes be the bleakest of months weather-wise.

People have wrapped up warm and got out of the house to get up close to some local sport.

Winter sporting codes have recorded good crowds on the sideline and back in the clubrooms as people look to reconnect with their community and support the local team.

Most sports have been forced to scale back their seasons because of the late start, but that means every game means something, so the contest is more than willing.
