Honing old skills, developing new ones in ‘big fun day’

"A big fun day" is what Southern Zone Rugby League is promising to deliver these school holidays.

Its junior development camp, held in collaboration with Otago Rugby League, will help girls and boys aged 10 to 13 develop their skills and knowledge of the sport. Rotating stations will include two-man tackles and activities for children to put their positioning, passing and catching skills to good use.

Southern Zone Rugby League Otago development officer Atawhai Hotene said it was not only a chance for players to try their skills, but develop some new ones.

This year, a new personal wellbeing and fitness focus — "it’s more than just a game" — would be added to the programme.

"It’s a chance to sit down and get kids talking about wellness and goal setting."

Even children who were not rugby league players would be able to take something away from the day as participants would learn skills that could be interchangeable with different sports, she said.

"It is a big fun day for kids ... a good chance to meet some new people and try something new."

The free development camp will be held on July 15, from 9.30am to 3.45pm, at Dunedin’s Logan Park 1.
