When the doors of the Clinton BP fuel station unexpectedly closed in July 2009, Clinton residents rallied and raised money to open and run their own petrol station and store.

The new store, dubbed "The Clinton Express" (pictured above with the RD1 fuel station), opened for business on December 28, marking the completion of the second stage of the community service station project.

The re-established Clinton fuel station opened in June 2010 as a self-service 24-hour fuel stop, selling RD Petroleum products. The old store behind the fuel stop was demolished six months ago to make room for a 130sq m retail shop.

Clinton Community Company chairman John Cochrane said a lessee had been found for the first 12 months and the store was open and trading, although the shop was not quite finished.

The shop is community owned and stocks "food to go", limited groceries and seasonal farm supplies, and will also be a depot for Clutha Vets.

Despite being open for only a week, it seemed to be attracting plenty of business. When the Otago Daily Times called more than five customers visited the store in the space of 10 minutes.

Mr Cochrane said the finishing touches would be completed in the next few weeks, and an official opening would be held next month.
