Australian visitor numbers up

Transtasman visitor numbers increased by 7.6% in November compared to the corresponding month last year, Statistics New Zealand reports.

Overall visitor arrivals for November were up 1.7% on last year, with 230,300 visitors coming to New Zealand, Statistics NZ's monthly International Travel and Migration survey found.

Tourism New Zealand chief executive Kevin Bowler said in a statement last week Australia led the way in producing a solid result for the month.

"Australia is by far our biggest market, accounting for some 44% of all visitor arrivals, year-end November 2011, so growth in this market typically translates to overall growth for the country."

Mr Bowler said campaigns now aimed to both capitalise on the interest in New Zealand from the Rugby World Cup tournament.

The South Island Road Trip campaign was launched in late September.

Consistent growth out of Asian markets, including China, continued in November.
