Mid-micron wool in demand

Wool prices remained firm for most types at the wool sale in Christchurch on Thursday.

The feature of the sale was the good demand for mid-micron wool for which prices were up to 4% dearer.

A small amount of merino was on offer resulting in erratic prices for most micron categories.

Crossbred second shear 75mm-125mm was also in strong demand, Roger Fuller, of Elders Primary Wool, said.

World uncertainty and volatile currency continued to make trading conditions difficult. That would be tested in the coming months with weights of wool hitting the market.

Good quality wool was still in demand and growers returning good wool weights should be pleased with the returns, Mr Fuller said.

Good-style fleece (31 to 35 micron) was 1% dearer, with an average clean price of 685c/kg, good-style full-length crossbred fleece (35 to 39 micron) was unchanged at 680c, second shear fleece (75mm to 125mm) was 1% dearer with an average clean price of 660c, and second shear (50mm to 100mm) was slightly dearer with an average clean price of 600c.

Crossbred oddments were 1%-2% dearer and mid-micron wool sold 2% dearer, Dave Burridge, of PGG Wrightson Wool, said.

Australia and New Zealand, China and Western Europe were principal buyers, supported by the Middle East, India and United Kingdom.
