The New Zealand Football Federation's national futsal league kicks off in Dunedin tomorrow in the first of three series to be held around the country.
This year's national league will involve seven provincial teams competing in the fast-paced five a-side version of football played on a basketball-sized court.
Futsal South development manager Mike Clark said he was confident the Otago-based side could do well in the competition.
"I would like to see us get into the final and I am hoping we have got a team that can do that."
Clark said over the past three months Futsal South had held trials and competitions to pick a 25-man squad.
The squad had been trimmed down to 12 players for this series, but that did not mean those players who missed out would not get game time in the remaining two series, he said.
The players in the squad were students, physiotherapists and workers who were picked from Wanaka, Queenstown and Dunedin.
Clarke was expecting the toughest competition to come from Wellington-based Capital Futsal and Auckland's Futsal East City, but was also weary of Central Futsal-Hawke's Bay, which was sending a side of 18-19 year olds.
Reigning national futsal league champion New South Wales is not competing in this year's competition as it is now involved in an Australian competition.
New Zealand and Australia futsal were under the control of their respective national football federations and because of this the sport was growing rapidly, Clarke said.
The series kicks off at the Edgar Centre at 1pm tomorrow and at 9am on Sunday.
Series two would be held in Auckland in February and series three, along with the finals, would be held in Wellington in March.
