The Star Regent 24 Hour Book Sale has been cancelled.

For the first time in its history the event will not go ahead, on its 40th anniversary which was set to happen on June 12 and 13.

The Anything But Book sale on April 16 has been postponed, and the Mainfreight Donation Collection Day on March 29 has been cancelled.

Regent Theatre director Sarah Anderson said the 24 Hour Book Sale would have been the culmination of years work by over 50 volunteers.

"We do not cancel this lightly, but cannot risk the well-being of those same volunteers, the musicians who entertain us or our loyal book buying public.

"The health and well-being of our team and everyone who visits our venue is our priority."

Supporters who wished to donate items for either sale were asked to hold on to them for the time being, as all collections are cancelled for the foreseeable future.

"Please do not drop your books off at the theatre.

"We will let everyone know when collections and drop-offs are reinstated and appreciate your understanding.

"Next years sale will be spectacular."
