Police seek pair after shooting

Police are still seeking a man and a woman after a gun was fired in a confrontation between rival gangs in Gisborne.

A series of altercations in the CBD on Saturday night began with women brawling and hitting each other with sticks and ended with a shot being fired early on Sunday, police said.

No one was hurt when the cut-down .22 rifle was fired.

Armed police visited several houses around Gisborne yesterday and two people who fled Gisborne in a car were pursued by police to Wairoa.

The ECT Rescue Helicopter was called in by the Gisborne armed offender squad to help pursue the vehicle and drop squad members at a property where one of the offenders was believed to be hiding.

The offender had already fled and police were this morning still seeking a man and woman, both 33, in relation to the firearms incident.

A warrant for their arrest was being sought from the courts this morning but police believed the pair had left the Gisborne area.

A 31-year-old man was arrested and charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm.

Gisborne detectives were working with colleagues in Wairoa to deal with gang-related incidents, although the conflict at the weekend was not related to a series of incidents in Wairoa, said Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott.
