Outram School years 7 and 8 pupils dash out of the surf at St Clair Beach after an hour-long learn-to-surf session, with supplied wetsuits, about 2pm yesterday.

‘‘There was great enthusiasm and sense of fun,’’ school principal Kim Allan said. Pupils visited Tunnel Beach in the morning and later, about 12.45pm, went to the beach, as part of the school’s ‘‘adventure pathway’’ programme and another optional achievement scheme, with years 7 and 8 teacher Tracey Hunter and parent supporters.

None of the pupils had tried surfing before and few had previously been to Tunnel Beach, Miss Allan said.

They were ‘‘a great group that supported each other well’’, and earlier, had also gone to the Dunedin Botanic Garden band rotunda to eat their lunch.
