Up the river, with paddles

There was plenty of paddling power on the Waikouaiti River on Saturday as Karitane School held its Paddle Out Challenge.

The event was organised to both promote the school and boost water safety.

About 40 people using a variety of craft paddled their way through a course that criss-crossed the river.

Among those out enjoying the water in a waka were (from left) Ollie and Tray Rangi (both 9) and Cyrus Burrow (8), of Waikouaiti, and Brendan Flack, of Karitane.

For those who worked up an appetite, there was a sausage sizzle afterwards.
