After more than 25 years' genre-hopping collaboration, UK MC, vocalist, producer and DJ Spikey Tee is nearing the completion of his biggest project yet - his debut album.

Spikey Tee has featured on numerous recordings spanning drum 'n' bass and reggae, and is best known in New Zealand for his work with New Zealand's Sola Rosa and Agent Alvin.

Now based in Australia, the artist plays at Subculture tomorrow night, before going on an international tour with Sola Rosa.

Having joined the group as a guest vocalist, he is now a fully-fledged member of the band's live line-up, next week touring Australia, Europe and America as the Sola Rosa Soundsystem.

Sola Rosa recently signed with German label Melting Pot, and is embarking on a "stripped down" tour of its latest album Get It Together, with founder Andrew Spraggon and vocalist Lisa Tomlins.

The plan is not global domination, says Spikey, but the outfit needs to move beyond New Zealand.

"Something needed to happen with Sola Rosa. We needed to spread our wings and we will see how it goes."

When asked if punters at tomorrow night's gig will hear any of his new material, he said he was unsure if his set length would allow it.

"It definitely depends on how long I've got to play out, but there'll be some older dubstep, a fair bit of new drum and bass as it's been a while since I've done that ... I might even blast the mic."

• Spikey Tee plays Subculture from 11pm tomorrow. Earlybird doorsales $5.
