An intruder has repeatedly slashed a woman with a knife during a terrifying home invasion in Sydney's west.
The 49-year-old victim woke just after midnight on Wednesday as the man began attacking the woman in her home at Byron Road, Guildford.
The woman received lacerations across her head, back, face, hands and legs as she screamed and struggled with the intruder, who eventually fled.
She has been taken to Westmead Hospital, where she is reported in a stable condition.
The woman is expected to have surgery later on Wednesday.
Detectives have completed a forensic examination of the woman's home and have asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
