About 2.40pm, the rental vehicle was turning south from a give-way sign on State Highway 83 on to SH1 when it collided with the Toyota and caravan, travelling north on SH1, throwing wreckage across a wide area of the highway.
The rental vehicle stopped near the intersection, while the Toyota and caravan went across the southbound lane on SH1, down a bank and into a paddock.
A South Otago couple in the Toyota towing the caravan were taken to Oamaru Hospital and treated for moderate injuries. None of the five Chinese tourists in the rental vehicle was injured.
Police, two ambulances and the rescue unit from the Oamaru Fire Brigade attended. Police were investigating the crash late yesterday and no further information was available.
