Plans for the new multimillion-dollar multipurpose sports facility were presented to pupils and staff during an assembly yesterday in the form of a video which showed what the complex would be like to walk through.
The facility, designed by McCoy and Wixon Architects, will have a large court for basketball and badminton, a weights room, a classroom, changing rooms and a teachers' work space.
The school's board of proprietors chairman Ron Lewis said the windows in the building would allow more natural light to enter the gymnasium, creating a less gloomy atmosphere during physical education lessons.
"The school's present gymnasium has done its dash. The lighting is poor and there is no insulation.
"It's also too small for our needs. It was built in 1975 for use by up to 200 pupils. We now have about 500 pupils."
Mr Lewis said the development would create challenges for the school because the old gym would be demolished, and the new $3 million-$4 million facility built in its place.
During the assembly, principal Mike Corkery said pupils would have to be patient during construction because activity space would be at a premium, and joked they might be asked to do more yoga than basketball during PE lessons.
It is hoped building would start next month and be completed for the 2013 academic year.
The gymnasium project follows the completion of the school's $7 million Edgar Learning Centre which opened in 2008 and was recently paid off.
