Lower dollar spurs wool prices higher

Prices for all styles of wool increased on the back of a cheaper New Zealand dollar at the wool sale in Christchurch yesterday.

There was strong competition for new season's hogget wool, reflecting not only the excellent quality and presentation of wool but also the firm Chinese demand, PGG Wrightson Wool auctioneer Dave Burridge said.

With the end of the pre-lamb shorn wool now in sight, bidding for the last of the premium wool was well supported.

Good-style fleece (31 to 33 micron) increased 2%, with an average clean price of 720c/kg, while 33-35 micron increased 2%-3%, with an average clean price of 700c/kg.

Good-style full-length crossbred fleece (35 to 39 micron) and second shear fleece (75mm to 125mm) lifted 2%-4%. Crossbred oddments were 2%-4% up, while mid-micron fleece was generally unchanged.

Merino wool did not fare so well, with 17-18.5 micron wool down 15%-20% and 19-20 micron down 5%-10%, New Zealand Wool Services International general manager John Dawson said.

Principal buying came mainly from China, and Europe, with good support from Middle East and Australia and New Zealand.
