At last some good news for the Wallabies, with star flanker David Pocock declaring himself available for selection for Saturday's Rugby World Cup clash with Russia in Nelson.

Pocock has missed Australia's past two games with back soreness, but says he's itching to return.

"It's feeling good," Pocock said on Monday.

"I'm keen to get out there. It would be great to get some running in the legs and, yeah, I'm just keen to play.

"I've got through a fair bit of work the past couple of weeks just trying to settle it all down and do all the right things and then ran really well yesterday morning, so it should be full training this week.

"It all depends on Robbie (Deans) and what the coaches are looking at for the Russians."

Pocock, challenging All Black captain Richie McCaw as the premier openside flanker in world rugby, has been a frustrated observer the past two weeks and found it particularly painful watching Australia lose to Ireland.

"It was tough. I think it was tough for the whole group," he said.

"You never want to lose those games and it was one that we really went in looking to win, but it just didn't happen on the night.

"It's put us in a tough position, but that's just something we've got to deal with - beat Russia and then move on and play South Africa in the quarters."

The Wallabies are expected to put on a big score against Russia, but Pocock maintains the tournament lightweights deserve respect.

"I've seen all their games and they're a team with a lot of fight," he said.

"They haven't obviously got the results they've been after but you can't fault their intensity, the way they fly into the tackle area.

"They scored a few good tries against Ireland as well on the weekend."

While Pocock is raring to go, centre Rob Horne, who has a fractured cheekbone, and back-rower Wycliff Palu, carrying a strained hamstring, will have their World Cup fate determined on Monday when they visit specialists in Christchurch.

Horne is clinging to the hope he doesn't require surgery and may be able to make a miracle comeback in the knockout stages, while Palu's condition is not considered dire and should only sideline the big No.8 for a match or two.

Along with Pocock, goalkicking winger James O'Connor (hamstring) and flanker Scott Higginbotham (back) will also resume training on Tuesday after missing last Friday's win over the USA.

Both should be available for selection this week.
