Otago rugby league fans should find out in two weeks whether one of the sport's major annual international games will be held at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Dunedin has been reported as being in the frame for the Anzac test between the Kiwis and the Kangaroos since it became clear Christchurch's AMI Stadium would not be available for the 2012 season.

But Dunedin Venues Management Ltd chief executive David Davies said this week there had been no discussions with the league since preliminary discussions were held between the two parties more than a month ago.

The possibility of Dunedin hosting the test emerged last month, after engineers recommended to the Christchurch City Council the Hadlee Stand at AMI Stadium be demolished, and a Christchurch city councillor said the stadium would not be available for the 2012 season.

New Zealand Rugby League chief executive Jim Doyle said at the time preliminary discussions with DVML had been held, and the stadium was being considered, along with others.

The match was moved from Christchurch to the Gold Coast in May, after the February 22 earthquake, and the league planned to return the test to Christchurch next year.

If that was no longer possible, keeping the game in the South Island, so Christchurch people could still attend, was regarded as a positive option.

Doyle said, when asked for an update on the issue, the league would hold a board meeting on September 28 or 29, and he would present his position at that time.

In the last month he had been discussing the matter with other venues and Australian league officials, but the result would not be revealed until after the board meeting.

Asked if Dunedin could be optimistic about attracting the test, Doyle said: "You can always be optimistic."
