Clutha Competition to ensure district is 'match ready'

The Clutha District Council is asking businesses, groups and individuals one question: are you match ready?

Although the Clutha district would not be hosting any Rugby World Cup games, the council encouraged local people to "dress up" their workplaces, community facilities and households to provide a bright, friendly welcome to visitors.

Community co-ordinator Jean Proctor said the council was running a competition for the best "match ready" photographs.

There were three categories - best-dressed business, best-dressed community group or organisation and best-dressed individual - with a $250 cash prize in each.

"This is a real chance for locals to have some fun and to show their pride in being from Clutha Country."

Tourism Catlins and Catlins Coast Inc are encouraging Catlins residents to spend a few hours on September 18 to clear rubbish in the area.

Tourism Catlins projects co-ordinator Kim Dodds said there would be no organised cleanup as the group was "quite confident" the community would take time to clean up their roadsides.

Townships are using the Rugby World Cup as a catalyst to promote a "tidy towns" initiative.
