Sewerage scheme to be investigated

A wastewater scheme at Cardrona, servicing at least Cardrona Village, will be investigated by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Funding of $15,000 to investigate the proposal was approved yesterday which emerged from a meeting between council representatives, Cardrona Residents and Ratepayers Association representatives and developers at Cardrona on August 24.

The broad investigation will examine two options - a scheme just for Cardrona Village or a combination village, Cardrona Alpine, Snow Park, and Mt Cardrona Station development.

In a report to yesterday's infrastructure services committee meeting, infrastructure services acting general manager Ken Gousmett said it would allow the preferred option and costs to be included in the council long term plan. To do so, the costs must be available by mid November 2011, allowing community consultation in April-June next year.

His report stated the capital, operating costs and impact on rates would "make it difficult to achieve a successful outcome" and require the full co-operation of potential developers and residents.

"Because the ratepayer users (existing and future) have to meet the full cost of a scheme, council requires a high level of ratepayer support.

"Prior to a scheme being committed, council will arrange a ratepayer vote to be carried out and two-thirds support is required."

The earliest time further funding would be available was July 2012, subject to community and council approval.
