Carter giving farewell speech tomorrow

Former Labour MP Chris Carter will deliver his farewell speech to Parliament tomorrow and Labour leader Phil Goff said he will not attempt to vet the speech in any way.

Mr Carter is heading to Kabul with a United Nations anti-corruption job. His resignation will take effect from the end of September, but he will deliver his valedictory tomorrow.

Mr Carter was expelled from Labour after sending an anonymous letter to media questioning Mr Goff's leadership.

Mr Goff laughed when asked if he was nervous about what Mr Carter might say in his valedictory.

"It's up to Chris Carter what he puts into his valedictory . I wish him well for his future career _ I'm not influencing what he might or might not say, that's completely up to him.''

Asked if he believed Mr Carter was the right person for the job with the UN, he said it was up to the UN to decide who it would employ.

"I wish him well in that new position.''

He did not know if Chris Carter intended to finish writing his book on the former Labour government.
