McQuade Book

A book celebrating the life of Oamaru equestrian identity Margaret McQuade will be released at the end of the month.

Maggie, as she was known, died in 1984 aged 86, after running riding schools in the town for more than half a century.

The book was compiled by Jan Wedge, who said Miss McQuade was quite a character.

"She used to eat the molasses and say 'what's good for the horse is good for me'.

"Everyone was a wee bit afraid of her, but she seemed to know how to put the right child on the right horse," she said.

Maggies Hosses will be launched at Teschemakers on August 27.
