The cultural diversity of 26 countries was celebrated and shown at a fashion show in Invercargill on Saturday.

Hundreds of residents dressing in their native costumes and displayed their countries' culture at the Multicultural Fashion Show.

Co-ordinator Meggy Bartlett-McBride said the fashion show was held to mark the Southland Multicultural Council's 20 years.

The organisation supported more than 2000 foreigners assisting with settlement issues and providing social support.

''We wanted to celebrate the organisation's roots, promoting and celebrating the cultural diversity in the region.''

Southland Multicultural Council president Neill Rumble said Southland is made up of people from about 113 countries.

''We are proud to bring 26 countries to represent their roots in the event.''

Nepalese Asmi Ta used her traditional bridal gown during the event.

She moved to Invercargill about three years and felt very welcome in the community.

''Southland people are very generous. I'm feeling very proud to be able to show my roots and share my culture with everyone here.''

This was the first time the council had promoted the fashion show and the organisers hope it becomes an annual event.
