Voting still possible for the unenrolled

There is still time for those not enrolled, to vote in this year's local body elections.

Voting papers for those who registered before August 16 should arrive by Wednesday.

Residents not enrolled in the area they live in or ratepayers not enrolled in the district or city they own property in can still cast a special vote up until October 11.

Special voting booths will be available in each district by the end of the week for people to vote by ballot if they did not receive a form, have damaged or lost it, or are not enrolled.

Residential electors are those who are enrolled in the area they live in, while ratepayer electors are those who own property but are registered to vote at an address elsewhere.

Ratepayer electors can vote both where they live and where they own property.

Special voting papers can be mailed out early in the voting period but must be submitted by noon on October 12.

Dunedin City Council deputy electoral officer Sharon Bodeker said an enrolment form could be filled out at the same time as a special vote was cast.

It was best not to leave the process until the last minute, to ensure the enrolment was done in time, she said.

Queenstown Lakes District Council electoral officer Jane Robertson said people could enrol to vote up to 5pm on October 11. That applied to both residential and ratepayer electors, she said.
