Fitter Spirit crushes Northland

The Otago Spirit has nearly brought up a century of points in its first two games after a convincing 40-7 win over Northland in Whangarei on Saturday.

The side scored six tries, and all but one were converted by Sheree Hume, in a display where it ran the home team round and created opportunities.

The side led 21-0 at halftime and its superior fitness won out, although wet weather in the last quarter of the game slowed down the Otago attack.

Otago coach Scott Manson said the Otago side was solid in the contact area and it managed to move the home side from side to side and create mismatches on defence.

It could have won by more but the side needed to brush up on when to let the ball go and if it got the ball in the right area to use it wisely, Manson said.

But it was good that the side was creating so many opportunities and working really hard against some teams which were considerably bigger than them. The side was good at moving bodies at the breakdown to keep continuity in its game.

It has opened the season last week with a 57-5 win over Taranaki.

Scoring a bonus point was welcome and the side displayed plenty of speed.

Centre Amy du Plessis played well last week against Taranaki and continued to impress in Whangarei. She ran hard and used her pace to get into good positions.

Lock Julia Gorinski also had a lively game and was rewarded for her efforts with a try.

The Otago scrum was also in the ascendancy, which Manson said was a rarity for the side and it was great to go forward through its set piece. Prop Eilis Doyle put in a good performance.

The side had worked hard on its discipline from last week and was much better at not getting caught offside.

The team will take on Tasman this Saturday, in Oamaru.

Manson said the team was looking forward to playing in Oamaru and getting some good support.

Tasman beat Taranaki on Saturday.
