Good crowd expected for stadium's first game

A big walk-up crowd is expected for the first official game at the new Forsyth Barr Stadium on Sunday.

More than 2500 tickets have been sold for the rugby match between North Otago and West Coast, while 4000 tickets have been sold for the football clash between the Phoenix and the Brisbane Roar on August 20.

Dunedin Venues Management Ltd marketing and communications manager Jo Scully said a big walk-up crowd expected for the match on Sunday.

She had heard of busloads of people heading south for the game from North Otago who had not yet bought tickets.

With the game on Sunday the first official match to be played at the new venue, DVML was hoping for a crowd of about 5000.

Scully said this weekend there would be no eftpos facilities operating at the stadium, so people should come with cash.

Eftpos would be available at the stadium at later games.

Sales for the Phoenix game were encouraging, with a lot of football clubs banding together to buy tickets, she said.

She hoped for a crowd of 10,000 to the game on August 20.

Knox College will play Selwyn College in the first game on the ground during the opening of the stadium on Friday.

In a roofed stadium, the excuse of waiting to see how the weather was on the day of the game was no longer an excuse to not buy a ticket early, Scully said.
