The race for the Dunedin City Council's top job is officially under way, as 14 candidates vie to replace outgoing Mayor Dave Cull and wear the mayoral chains.

At the close of nominations at 12pm, six incumbent city councillors had joined the race - Crs Rachel Elder, Christine Garey, Aaron Hawkins, Jim O'Malley, Lee Vandervis and Andrew Whiley.

Alongside them were another eight mayoral candidates from outside council - Scout Barbour-Evans, Bob Barlin, Finn Campbell, Carmen Houlahan, Mandy Mayhem-Bullock, Malcolm Moncrief-Spittle, Jules Radich and Richard Seager.

In the council's 2016 election 11 candidates stood for mayor.

Another 37 candidates had put their hands up for one of the 14 other seats around the council table, and there were some last-minute surprises.

As the rush of last-minute nominations were received, it emerged that Dunedin businessman Russell Lund was among those vying for election.

And, among incumbent councillors, Cr Conrad Stedman confirmed he would not be seeking a second term.

Two of Dunedin's six community boards - the West Harbour and Strath-Taieri boards - would also be elected unopposed in October, after just six nominees were received for the six vacancies on each.
