Dashing opening batsman Brendon McCullum is expected to play for Otago this summer despite his decision to sign with the Brisbane Heat and play in the Australian domestic twenty/20 competition.

The 29-year is on a holiday and could not be reached for comment yesterday. But Otago Cricket Association chief executive Ross Dykes believes McCullum will be able to continue playing for the Volts and, perhaps, even captain the side.

The Australian Big Bash gets under way in mid December and, while the New Zealand domestic schedule has not been made public yet, the tournament is expected to start in late December.

However, Dykes said it will not impact on McCullum's ability "to play for us".

"As I also understand it, there will be discussions between Queensland Cricket, New Zealand Cricket and Otago Cricket around any cricket that he will play." Dykes said.

"So I don't see it as being an issue. It is probably an opportunity for Brendon to display his wares in Australia without impacting on his ability to do justice to Otago."

With experienced batsman Craig Cumming stepping down as captain, there has been talk McCullum would take the reins for the twenty/20 campaign and Aaron Redmond take over as captain of the one-day and four-day team.

"There has been speculation but what we need to do is abide by the structures and run the captaincy issues past the board, which we will do at a meeting this Wednesday.

"We have no reason to believe our recommendations to the board will not be accepted."

McCullum became the second player to score an international twenty/20 century with his astonishing undefeated 116 off 58 deliveries against Australia last year. He also scored a memorable century for Otago that summer.

His ability to find the boundary, play match-winning innings and attract spectators to the game make him a prized signing for any side.

McCullum has played for Kolkata and Kochi in the Indian Premier League and made a trip across the Tasman to play for New South Wales in the 2009 Big Bash.

New Zealand Cricket is expected to release the provincial contract lists on Friday and the domestic schedule is also expected any day now.
