A small fishing boat which has worked out of Oamaru for years may come ashore permanently as a sandpit in a children's playground at Friendly Bay.
The proposal is being put to the Waitaki District Council's harbour subcommittee on Monday as it considers a strategy to redevelop the Oamaru harbour and former goods yard.
The idea is to renovate the fishing boat before partly setting it in the ground on the Friendly Bay reserve, where it will be filled with sand. It will form part of a Steampunk-themed playground.
Council property manager Dougall McIntyre said other components of the playground were in design and development, in consultation with children's focus groups.
The fishing boat could be adapted for smaller children, along with a story board outlining its history.
Volunteers had offered to help with the project.
