Roxburgh is pleased with its return to senior ranks and has the bonus of adding another Otago player to its history books.
The club played in the Central Otago club competition in 2016 but for the following two years did not have a senior team on the field.
Club president Dave Hall said that after the time away, it was felt the club had to do something and get a team back on the field.
But instead of going back into the Central Otago competition, the club decided to head south and play in the southern region competition.
Hall said with the club having players based in Dunedin, it was decided to play in South and West Otago because it was easier for those Dunedin-based players to get to games.
About half a dozen players were based in Dunedin.
The side did not manage to make the top four of the South Otago competition but did manage to notch a win over Clutha, giving the Balclutha-based side its first loss in more than three seasons.
The squad numbered more than 30 at the start and spirit had remained high despite the second round being tougher as injuries hit and some key players were unavailable.
The side was in the playoff for the bottom four this weekend.
Hall said the club had good turnouts after games at the clubrooms at Roxburgh and also strong travelling support for away games. A small town like Roxburgh needed a centre for the community and that is what a senior team in the town did when it played games on a Saturday afternoon.
Most of the players indicated they would be back to play next year and he hoped that would encourage other players to join the team.
Prop Ben Millar had come out of the club this year and ended up making his debut for Otago in the Ranfurly Shield defence in Wanaka last Saturday. He came on as a second-half replacement.
Millar had played in the the Dunedin metropolitan competition but turned out for Roxburgh this year because he worked on a farm in the Millers Flat area.
Roxburgh has had a sprinkling of players turn out for Otago, the last being Wayne Graham, when he played for the club and province in 1983-84.
