Owner has double success with Limousin steer

Evan Ferris, of Waikaia, has won overall champion in the annual Otago-Southland beef competition.

The competition was held at the Alliance Group's Mataura plant, with hoof judging by beef breeder Bob Neill, from Oamaru, and hook judging by Mervyn Wilson, of the Alliance Group.

Mr Ferris, who won both champion on the hoof and champion on the hook, was awarded both the Alan Dodd Trophy and the Doug Lindsay Memorial Trophy with his homebred Limousin steer, which was described by Mr Neill as "outstanding".

The reserve champion on the hoof was a Belgian Blue-Maine Anjou cross heifer, owned by Lindsay and Jo Bowmar, of Wyndham, which was "packed full of meat in all right right places, plus some", Mr Neill said.

Reserve champion on the hook was a Limousin-sired steer bred by Willie and Sharon Muir, of Wyndham.

Best native-bred animal was awarded to new entrants Stewart and Julia Eden for their Speckle Park-Murray Grey cross heifer.
