School building project begins

Pupils and parents of the Dunedin Rudolf Steiner School watch as the school's youngest and oldest pupils Penelope Rawle (6) and Alice Charity (13) dig the ceremonial first hole for the school's new building project.

The Maia school, which has 60 primary school pupils and 40 kindergarten children, is building extra classrooms and supplementary buildings so it can increase its primary pupil intake to 100.

It has been raising money for the project since March and has so far raised $300,000 and needs$1.2million to complete the project.

School executive officer Clare Ridout said the new classrooms would reflect a sense of nature.

The new designs would be made sustainably and "where possible, to bring in curves, and just a pleasant environment for young children and their families''.
