Waimate's band rotunda in Seddon Square, in this historic photograph looking towards Waimate Main School in the background, turns 100 tomorrow and the town's Edwardian group is planning a party.

The rotunda was one of the focal points in the centre of Waimate last century, and more recently during the town's biggest event, the December Strawberry Fare. It was officially opened on June 23, 1911, by Mr T. Hart, built by the King Edward memorial committee for the commemoration of King Edward VII. About 100 people braved cold weather to attend the ceremony.

Mr Hart said at the opening the rotunda would stand for "much enjoyment in the time to come", besides being one of the fine "show things of the town".

Waimate's Edwardian heritage group is planning to celebrate the centenary by making a presentation to Waimate District Council. The group recently assisted the council in supplying heritage colour pallets for the repainting of the rotunda.

The ceremony will take place at 2.30pm tomorrow with organisers hoping for better weather than prevailed for the opening 100 years ago.
