Pupils at St Mary's School in Milton will gather on the school's rugby field on Tuesday afternoon to await the arrival of the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter carrying a special visitor.
All Blacks captain Richie McCaw will visit the school as its prize for coming first in the Otago region in the Westpac Richie McCaw Chopper Challenge.
The school raised $1005 and, in recognition, up to five selected representatives from the school will take a helicopter flight with McCaw.
Warepa School, near Balclutha, was runner-up for the region, receiving a shirt signed by McCaw.
The challenge was a nationwide school competition to raise funds for rescue helicopters around New Zealand as part of the annual Westpac Chopper Appeal, which ran throughout May.
The country is divided into 16 rescue helicopter regions and more than 100 schools from as far afield as Whangarei and Invercargill registered.
Westpac national sponsorship manager Mark Graham said a total of $38,571 was raised from the school competition, which was a great result for the lifesaving choppers.
Former All Black and Otago player Kees Meeuws visited pupils at St Mary's, Stirling School, near Balclutha, and St Joseph's in Oamaru last month as they were three of the first five schools to register for the challenge in the Otago region.
