Whizz-bang show marks uni's 150th

This striking fireworks display which lit the night sky above the Dunedin Municipal Chambers on Saturday was among the highlights of a long holiday weekend of celebrations, marking the University of Otago's 150th anniversary.

Earlier on Saturday, many former executive members of the Otago University Students' Association relished the chance to meet old friends as they flocked to a special tour of the University Union building, and reflected on an almost six-fold increase in the university student roll, from about 3500 in 1960, to about 20,000 today.

Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy later hailed the university as Dunedin's "beating heart", in the afternoon at a special university convocation ceremony at the Dunedin Town Hall.

The celebrations yesterday included a 10am service at Knox Church, and an evening gala concert at the town hall, "A Celebration of Otago in Words and Music", organised by the music department.

The activities continue again today with Forsyth Barr Stadium tours in the morning and a Cameron Shield rugby match at the University Oval at 2pm, between old rivals Selwyn College and Knox College.
